Drifter gunman Joe (Clint Eastwood) arrives in the Mexican village of San Miguel at the border of the United States of America, and befriends the owner of the local bar, Silvanito. Joe discovers that the town is dominated by two gangster lords: John Baxter and the cruel Ramón Rojo. When Joe kills four men of Baxter's gang, he is hired by Ramón's brother Esteban Rojo to join their gang. However, Joe decides to work for both sides, playing one side against the other. THE PERFECT HANGING TREE - According to "Once Upon a Time in the Italian West", director Sergio Leone spotted a tree while on location that he thought would be perfect for the hanging tree at the beginning of the film. So he had the tree dug up and relocated.

EASTWOOD HELPED CREATE HIS CHARACTERS DISTINCT STYLE - He bought the black jeans from a sport shop, the hat came from a Santa Monica wardrobe firm, and the trademark black cigars he purchased himself and cut into three pieces to make them shorter.

EASTWOOD WAS NOT THE FIRST CHOICE - After considering Henry Fonda, director Sergio Leone offered the role to James Coburn, Charles Bronson (who said it was the "worst script I have ever seen"), Richard Harrison, and Eric Fleming, before finding Clint Eastwood for the part.
